About Kate

When I first started this blog, I wanted to record my adventures in baby poo and vomit. So… I kept writing, and now I enjoy helping parents through my Aware Parent consultations and offering advice on making timeless parenting practices work in for families living in today’s world.

My husband and I are from America, but we now live on the Gold Coast of Australia with our three children.

I have a Masters of Educational practice from Bond University and went to Salisbury University for my undergraduate degree, where I studied biology and environmental marine science. I’ve been a vegetarian nearly my whole life and grew up without a tv (thanks mom and dad, even though I hated it while I was growing up). I have been meditating and doing yoga and breathing every day since I did my first  Art of Living  course in 2002 and in 2005, I trained to become an instructor for their programs. In 2014, I became a certified Aware Parenting Instructor.

My husband and I surf too, in case you didn’t already figure that out from the title of my blog.

This blog is mostly about my journey through motherhood and life and is full of tips and advice on Aware Parenting and more.

I’m so happy you’re here and hope you enjoy!

  3. Hey kate, I bumped into u at hospital while u were getting hearing check on goldie.. I’m not on facie or the likes anymore. Had my baby now, wanted to catch up with gold coast attachment and baby wearing mummas from facie, do u know when they meet next and where ? Also would be good to catch up with u as we live so close. Email me, ta..

  4. Hey Kate, I bumped into u at hospital when goldie was getting her hearing test, just touching base as I’m not on facie anymore. Do u know when attachment parenting mummas meet next? Otherwise would be good to meet up I’m often at rainbow beach, just had my baby. It’s Tania by the way.

    • Hi Tania!!! How are you! So good to hear from you, I knew that you were off FB, but I didn’t know how to get in touch with you. I wonder if you got your VBAC 🙂 I’m not sure when the next mumma’s meet is. I will email you my phone number, can you text me and send me yours? That’s probably the best way to keep in touch!

  5. Thanks for the like 🙂 your blog is so charming!

  6. Thanks for dropping by my blog. My sister (who lives on the Sunny Coast) took us to see Snapper Rocks just a few months ago – spectacular!

    • I would also be homesick if I ever had to leave here! But, of course, I did grow up on the east coast of America… talk about cold and miserable for 8 months of the year!

  7. Hey, so glad I found your blog, looking forward to reading more!

  8. Hi Kate,
I like your blog, and I think it rocks that you surf!! Many in my family would call me a “hippie” too, but I am just a forest dweller who cooks, homeschools my 5 year old, likes to write and cook up body potions in my kitchen 🙂 I will certainly follow and look forward to reading more! If you have the time and interest, I would love if you checked out my blog of kids projects & mom stuff!

  9. Hi Kate! Thanks for following my blog. I knew I had to follow yours when I saw your two girls were born in the same years as mine, and Goldie was on my girls’ name list!! Cute!! Glad you’re liking living in Aus. X

    • How cool! Goldie is after my husband’s grandmother, who raised him from when he was a little boy! I saw that you follow my friend’s blog, Megganmamma, so I had to check yours out 🙂

  10. Hi Kate, where can I find the pattern for the baby wearing wrap? Thank you!

  11. Thanks for the like Kate. I’m envious of the weather you have out there and wish I could surf… What age are you going to get your kids out on their surfboards?!

    • Thanks, but I haven’t always lived in such a nice climate! I learned how to surf in Maryland in the spring (brrrr)! We have taken the older one out a bit, but on the baby waves, I’ve seen some daring 3 year olds that were standing up, etc, but I guess whenever they express the interest 🙂

  12. Hi Kate! It’s nice to ‘meet’ you. 🙂 We are regular visitors to the GC. We were there over the weekend.
Thanks for following my blog; I’m following you now. 🙂

  13. Yoga. Motherhood. Babywearing. Crafts. We share these though we are oceans apart! 🙂 Thank you for stopping by my little blog and following! Look forward to read more from you 🙂

  14. Thanks for reading my blog!!

  16. Hehe – my friends call me a hippie too (mostly because I’m vegan). Anyway, I stumbled upon your blog and it seems like we’ve got a lot in common. Besides the veggie thing, I’m also interested in cooking, yoga, crafting and meditating. You’re probably more competent in all of these things than I am. I’m just getting into meditating. I’ve been interested in it for a long time but have failed to establish a regular practice. I’m still working at that. Despite the fact that I live in Laguna Beach, I’m not a surfer. I do love the beach, however. Anyway, I look forward to getting to know you better through your blog. Celeste 🙂

    • Hi Celeste! Glad you found me! I like to call myself a sophisticated hippie 🙂 it’s so cool to find other people who are interested in similar things and it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been doing it! I’ve spent lots of time in Laguna beach, lovely place! Have you heard of the Art of Living? There is a physical center right in LA and many other smaller groups that run courses near you, not in the city. I can send a link when I get to my computer, but if you check their website, you will find a center near you! The art of living course is what got me started on meditating and doing it daily 🙂

  17. Hi Kate!
I love your blog and I made my own sling before I found this and bought fabric for more.. I’m a little confused about the thickness.. My 100% cotton is a little thick so I got 100% linen and it seems more breathable.. Can I use just one layer? Or would it be best to fold it in half and use both?

    • With linen, you can use one thickness, for sure! I only doubled up because my fabric was extremely thin! If your fabric is 140cm wide, you can just chop in half and make two! Glad you enjoyed 🙂

Hi Kate – I grew up in NJ as well!! Been living in Brissy for nearly 5 years, came here for degree #2, met my husband and fell in love (with him and the country!)! Found your blog recently on a babywearing page, nice to read about other mumma’s on the same journey…. My little one is nearly 8 months and feeding hourly over night still – about to read your article on this as I definitely need a break (or just 3 hours of unbroken sleep)! Would love to chat sometime, send me an email maybe! 🙂

  19. Hi Kate,

We met today at the ABA meeting at Kirra. I love your blog! Very cool to see so many like minded people here! Would you mind terribly sending me some advice regarding the second hand woven slings we spoke about today? I’ve fallen in love with the idea of a simple piece of fabric, and young Henry loved being in cuddled up there on my back. Thanks Kate!

    • Hi Selena! Yeah, it was great to meet you too! So, there is an Australian baby wearing buy swap sell page… but it’s on facebook! Maybe you can use your husband’s account? Also, be sure to check gum tree and ebay, they sometimes have stuff too.

  20. Hi Kate,

I met you today at the ABA meeting at Kirra. I did just write a comment, but I hit something weird, so it may or may not show up. Anyway, great blog! Would you mind sending my in the right direction re the pre loved woven slings we spoke about today? Thanks Kate
