Meditation-katesurfs2

Even the ocean sometimes isn’t enough to shut up my mind.

Tonight, while I floated around in the sea, trying to catch my last wave in, my mind was a bubbling mess of thoughts — worries, ‘what ifs’, doubts and insecurities. I walked home in a huff and took a shower. Then dried myself off and reveled in the fact that the house was quiet. My husband had taken the kids grocery shopping!

So, without wasting a second, I plopped down on the floor and shut my eyes for a 20 minute meditation. When I opened my eyes, I felt so fresh, alert and calm. All the stupid thoughts that had been flying around in my head 20 minutes ago, were gone. My smile was back and my breath felt light.

The Art of Slowing Down

Slowdown

It was hot. Steamy summer stinking hot. No breeze. And, I, had to walk 4km (2.5 miles) totting two kids to get to playgroup because I was the one with the key and I had to open the building up.

If I had gone in my usual fashion, which is to rush out the door at the last possible minute and walk as fast as I can, I would have arrived at playgroup in an frantic puddle of sweat. So, on this particular day, I left five minutes early and called a friend of mine who could intercept me on the way to grab the key off me if I didn’t make it in time.

On this day, I refused to be in a hurry. Read the rest of this entry

Yoga Mamas!

Yoga Mamas!

There are lots of mums and bubs yoga classes out there, (I guess they call them mommy and baby yoga in America, sorry, to all my American readers, my language has been totally Aussie-fied.).  But… what do you do when your baby is mobile… Or… what do you do when your baby turns into a toddler… Or… your toddler turns into a three year old?  You keep doing yoga, is what you keep doing!  If not for your sake, for the sake of your kids!  Kids need less-stressed parents! Rainy Days with Lots of Smiles

Rainy Days with Lots of Smiles

Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella‘, what an epic song!  (check out this slightly hilarious ‘music video‘ of Betty Clooney singing this song while hanging out fake wash, in maybe  the early or mid 1950’s?). We sang it in our girls acapella choir group when I was going to Hackettstown High School in New Jersey.  Our chorus director, Mr. Witte, may he ever rest in peace, was the most amazing musician and no matter who or what he had singing, he could always make us sound awesome.  I can still hear how we sounded back then… (sniffle sniffle). Art of Living, Keeping Me ‘In’ Sanity for Over Ten Years.

Margo and Kate Meditate

As cute as this looks, I do prefer to meditate without a toddler on my lap!

What keeps me sane, may seem like insanity to other people.  I haven’t missed a day of meditation in ten years!

Over ten years ago, while I was in my second year at university, I did a program called the Art of Living Course.  They taught us all about yoga, meditation, life knowledge and most importantly, we learned this breathing technique called Sudarshan Kriya.   Read the rest of this entry
